Two excellent King students, Timothy Wang and josh Smith, have been accepted to Military Academy. Timothy will enter the Naval Academy and Josh will enter the Air force Academy. Congratulations and good luck in the Academy!
Natalie Guthrie, a former student at King High School will be performing at the Academy Awards on Sunday evening. She will be singing with the Southern California Children’s Chorus during the “In Memoriam” segment at 8:00 pm. Her choir has also recorded a song with Capital Records which will be played during the Best Foreign Language Film Award Nominee, Monsieur Lazhar of Canada. Natalie’s sister, Nicole (a student of Earhart Middle School) will also be preforming in the choir.
NJROTC Cadet Kimberli Graham, 12 grade, won First Place Honors in the Joseph C. Gilliam Academic Achievement Essay contest. Graham's essay on the topic "How has the Navy JROTC core mission of citizenship development positively influenced myself, my NJROTC unit, and my community," earned her a $750.00 scholarship.
The CIF State Office included Riverside King girls basketball coach Ann Dena Sjoerdsma among its 2011-12 Model Coach Award winners. Sjoerdsma, who has been at King since the school opened in 1999, was one of 15 winners were nominated through their local CIF Section office. They'll receive an award and be honored at their sport's State Championship or at an event of the recipient's choosing.
The RUSD Board of Education on Monday appointed current Ramona High School Principal Susan Mills as the new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. The Board also appointed Dr. Jaime Angulo as Principal of Ramona High School.
High school basketball superstar, Kawhi Leonard has become a starter for the San Antonio Spurs. Kawhi graduated from King in 2009 and play a few years for San Diego State before being picked up by the San Antonio Spurs.
King student, Rachael Smith recently competed in and won the local Veteran of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" contest. Rachael's essay and audio speech was titled, "Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?" The speech was graded on originality, content, and speech delivery. Rachael was encouraged to compete by her NJROTC instructor, Chief Julius Mesias and her high school counselor, Mrs. Valerie Spencer. Congratulations Lieutenant Smith!
King High School’s Senior Naval Science Instructor and JROTC Color Guard were invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Woodcrest Elementary School Veterans Appreciation assemblies on Thursday, November 9th. Guest speaker and Desert Storm Veteran, Lt Commander Thompson spoke to approximately 300 students, teachers, and veterans on “Why We Celebrate Veterans Day.” King’s Color Guard “presented” the American flag as the gathered audience proudly placed their hand over their heart and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
King beat Poly at Corona High School to capture league title and become the Big VIII Conference Champions! This image captures one of Thomas Appel’s (4) precision power throws which beat Poly 9-6 in the league playoffs!
LCDR Thompson and Chief Mesias present Cadet Josh Candlario with the September Cadet of the Month certificate. Cadet Candelario also was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Seamen Apprentice. Brovo Zulu!!
