Adams Elementary School is a "Friend of Core Knowledge" school. Core Knowledge is an exciting and innovative approach to learning developed by professor emeritus E.D.Hirsch Jr. in 1986, that actively builds on previous knowledge with lessons that are coherent, cumulative and content-specific. The Core Knowledge sequence provides a clear outline of content to be learned grade by grade so that knowledge, language and skills build cumulatively from year to year. This provides a rich base of common knowledge across multiple subjects that becomes the base for the next layer of learning. The Core Knowledge sequence incorporates both knowledge acquisition and critical thinking skills, which makes the cognitive processing of students much more effective, and learning more meaningful.
"Our society cannot afford a two-tiered system in which the affluent have access to a superior education, while everyone else is subjected to a dull and incoherent classroom experience. Academic excellence, educational equity and fairness demand a strong foundation of knowledge for all learners."
Having set high standards for learning, we believe all students can learn. We are prepared to work collaboratively with colleagues, students and parents to achieve this shared educational purpose. By the time students leave the sixth grade, they will have met or exceeded key standards.
