Statement from Superintendent Dr. David Hansen Regarding the 2016 Presidential Election

Dear Riverside Unified School District Family,

The emotionally charged and complex conversations that have surfaced during this year’s election season has left some of our students and families feeling anxious, frustrated and confused.

We want to assure each of our RUSD families that we have worked diligently with our principals, teachers and school-based staff to ensure that resources are available to every student to help them process and reflect upon their own feelings (positive or negative) about the election’s outcome.

Please find below some resources to use when talking to your students.

Safety for all our students is our top priority. While RUSD respects students’ freedom of speech and expression, the District wants all our students to feel secure by providing safe and respectful learning communities. Please know that RUSD has a protocol in place in the event of activities that are designed to disrupt the learning environment at any school.

Be assured that in the days, weeks and months ahead, we will continue to focus on the academic as well as the social and emotional wellbeing of each of our students. I want to take this moment to emphasize that the election outcomes do not change our direction, priorities, mission, or values. RUSD schools will continue to remain dedicated to maintaining positive school climates that promote student learning and development.

Please encourage your student to utilize the resources available at their school site. Encourage them to speak with a trusted adult at school or home if he or she feels fearful or overwhelmed by recent events. Counselors at every school are always available.

Thank you to everyone for being your best self. Your leadership will help our students feel safe, welcomed and respected.
