The Symphonic Band received a superior rating from the SCSBOA on March 10 and a unanimous superior rating from the National Association for Music Education on March 16. Only 7% of music ensembles receive this rating each year out of more than 30,000 performances nationally. 2016 marks the 46th year our music program has earned a superior rating. Admissions counselors from UCR hosted a workshop that provided information on the UC application process, tips for writing the personal statement, and information on housing, financial aid and scholarships. Congratulations to Adan Chavez! Adan has been selected to participate in the Smithsonian Latino Center's 2014 Young Ambassador's Program. One of 24 students selected nationwide, Adan will attend a leadership training in Washington D.C. followed by a four week internship at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. The summer internship includes community outreach to encourage early childhood literacy by participating in story time using bilingual children's books. Congratulations, Adan!

Liang Zhou was chosen by the AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers) as one of a 20 student team, representing the United States, who will be training at the University of Maryland, May 27th-June 7th, in preparation for the 45th International Physics Olympiad in Astana, Kazakhstan, July 13-21.
On Saturday, April 26th, Advanced Placement students voluntarily attended a lecture at the Culver Center with Holocaust survivor, Mark Rubin. The summaries of their experience and impressions were great! Several of them raised their hands and asked questions. Parents and students alike were moved by his story.

Our International Baccalaureate Diploma program and students were recognized as "Champions on the Rise" by the Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc. at the Champions of Justice Banquet on April 3. This award is given to students under 18 on a path to give back to the community and better themselves.
North has been named to the Washington Post's List of the 2014 Most Challenging High Schools across the nation. The list is based on the Post's Challenge Index, which determines the rate of students taking college-level tests, such as Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. North ranked 4th among schools in the Inland Empire and first among RUSD schools.

Congratulations to our Boys Basketball Team on a great season! We won 26 consecutive games on the court and finished the regular season as the #1 ranked team in CIF Division 1A. Selected to CIF's Open Division for the top 16 teams in the Southern Section and the State Open Division for the top 8 teams in Southern California, we qualified as a sectional semifinalist and regional quarterfinalist. The United Student League sponsored Husky Pride Day on Tuesday, March 4. Eighth graders living in North's attendance area and students who have applied to the International Baccalaureate program were treated to special performances in the Theater and club, organization and sports booths in the gym. Husky Pride was on display!

Congratulations to Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Mike Bartee! Coach Bartee has become the Inland Empire's All-Time Coaching Wins Leader, surpassing longtime Moreno Valley coach, John Dahl. Bartee's 647 career wins rank him 20th in state history and 10th among active high school boys basketball coaches.
Fifty members of the BSU, Multi-Cultural Council, MEChA and United Student League participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk-a-Thon held on January 20. The event was sponsored by the Riverside African American Historical Society in honor of the legacy of Dr. King and consisted of a 5K walk from Stratton Center to the RCC Digital Library and ended with snacks, activities, and a Rock-a-Thon.
Congratulations to Erica Nielsen, Luke Johnson and Rocio Robles! All three North students were finalists in this year's Reflections Program. Varsity Boys Basketball and Varsity Girls Basketball won tournaments over Winter Recess. The Blue Star Regiment finished the marching season by qualifying for championships in both the Southern California Judges Association and Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. They earned a bronze medal in their division and percussion placed 2nd overall at the SCJA Championships and they finished 8th at the prestigious SCSBOA Championships. Congrats, BSR!
Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Harry Ainlay of Edmonton, Alberta to win the REB Invitational Tournament. Deshon Taylor was named MVP and Dikymbe Martin joined him on the All-Tournament Team. CONGRATS HUSKIES!
Congratulations to Roberto Gutierrez and Anum Arshad! Both students were recently announced as winners in the City of Riverside Human Relations Commission's Diversity Essay Contest and Scholarship Program. Roberto placed first and earned a $1,000 scholarship. Anum placed third and will receive a $500 scholarship. Both students were recognized by the Board of Education on December 9. Congrats!
The JW North Pep Squad performed on the Downtown Mall on December 10. They danced, cheered, and sang Christmas carols with children. Way to give back, Pep Squad! Click for photos.
Varsity Boys Basketball won the championship of the Serrano High School Diamondback Shoot-out. Deshon Taylor (MVP) and Dikymbe Martin were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Junior Varsity Boys also won the championship of the Rancho Verde Tournament. Congrats, basketball teams!!
The United Student League sponsored the Winter Assembly on December 6. Celebrating with a Candy Land theme, academic and winter sports teams were recognized. Our Husky dressed as Santa and teachers were asked to "finish the lyrics" of holiday favorites. Click for photos.
The United Student League attended the California Association of Directors of Activities annual leadership conference at the Disneyland Hotel on November 25. Student leaders joined student body officers from Area F high schools representing Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Leaders attended breakout sessions where they shard ideas on how to develop and maintain a positive culture on campus.
The United Student League's annual Holiday Canned Food Drive yielded 7,636 food items donated by students and staff! Our donation was forwarded to the Community Settlement Association, Riverside's oldest non-profit agency. A special thank-you to all who donated. A great display of Husky Pride!
The Beautification Club held its fall Campus Cleanup Day on Saturday, November 16. Over 100 student volunteers showed up to assist! A special thank-you to Mrs. Solorzano and the Beautification Club for coordinating this wonderful event that shows our ever present Husky Pride!

Members of the North Harlequins participated in the annual Ghost Walk Riverside held October 25-26. The event is presented by the California Riverside Ballet and includes scary tours of downtown Riverside and ghost stories. Members of the Multi-Cultural Council and United Student League attended the Jostens CARE Conference at Grand Terrance High School on October 21. They learned many new ideas on recognizing students and staff, increasing positive behavior, and improving school culture and climate. Leaders are excited to implement strategies they learned at the conference with the theme, "We is Greater than Me!".
The Class of 2014 will be the first to graduate from our new stadium! In order to accommodate all families and ensure a safe environment, each senior will receive 7 complimentary tickets to the ceremony on Wednesday, June 11. Members of the Husky football team, United Student League and community service clubs supported the Riverside Citrus Classic Bike Ride for Education on Sunday, October 13. Student leaders volunteered at the water station at Andulka Park. Proceeds from the Citrus Classic benefit the Riverside Educational Enrichment Foundation.

Season passes are now available for alumni, parents, and community members! For the low price of $50, the season pass allows 10 entries to regular season home athletic contests including football, basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. Purchase from the Student Store daily, M-F, from 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. or at the home gate of the football stadium at varsity football games. No more standing in line AND save money!!
Football parking is available in North's front parking lot on Third Street and back parking lot on Linden Street. A $3 donation is appreciated and supports the band and football programs. Street parking is also available on Chicago Avenue. Students are encouraged to walk to home games or be dropped off/picked up in North's front parking lot. Become a permanent part of North history by honoring a special graduate, staff member, alumnus, graduating class, school program or athletic team.
