RUSD School Counselors Celebrate National School Counseling Week

RUSD Counselors

National School Counseling Week 2017 will be celebrated at RUSD from Feb. 6-10th. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), this year’s theme is "School Counseling: Helping Students Realize Their Potential," which will focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.  ASCA highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and planning for a career.

According to Jorge Perez, College and Career Readiness Specialist at Riverside Unified School District, the week provides recognition to counselors who "implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century."

RUSD school counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world.  Counselors also focus on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development by working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling.

"School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and personal/social skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."

RUSD school counselors help all students reach their potential in the areas of academic achievement, career development, and personal/social development, ensuring students become productive well-adjusted contributing members of our communities.  Their contributions to educating students and families is evident in the local and national recognition they have brought to RUSD which include:

·         Consistently increasing graduation rates

·         Increasing the 15 year long high school course rates known as the “A-G” requirements

Poly Counselor Yuri Nava
